Camp Nicolet

Green and Buff Forever!

One of the most anticipated days of the summer was certainly worth waiting for this year! Nicolet’s traditional “Marathon Day” is the one day that all campers and staff are placed either on the Green Team or the Buff Team (Nicolet’s official colors that represent the green pine trees and the sand). Team sports such as tennis, soccer, trampball, badminton, softball, volleyball, basketball and the staff tug-o-war take place the first part of the afternoon and points are tallied after each event. Team spirit, sports- ladyship, a team banner, original team songs and cheers also contribute to overall team points. The two teams pick themes each year upon which they base their creations. 2013 found the Green Team to be Army Men/Women and the Buff Team to be Minions – great costuming!

The final event of the special day is the great Marathon Race which involves every camper member of each team. Starting at Forest Lodge with a sharp blast of the air horn, relay runners hand off the green and buff batons and sprint to the stable. After naming parts of the horse, saddle, and bridle, runners carry the batons to the ski area where a team member dons helmet, lifejacket, and skis. The race continues on until most every activity in camp has been utilized. The first runner to reach the flagpole determines the team winner of the marathon race.

The Buff Team surged ahead during the first half of the race and despite a gallant effort, the Green Team could not make up the difference. The Buff Team reached the flagpole first declaring the team victorious for the race. However, points were tallied from all of the combined events and the Green Team won the day 170-120 by amassing the greater number of points. One of the closest competitions in recent years, a huge congratulations to both teams and all the campers and staff for giving it their best effort and displaying such a high level of good cheer and spirit. Pure fun!
