Camp Nicolet

Staff FAQs

Where is Camp Nicolet?

Camp Nicolet is located east of Eagle River, Wisconsin in the North Woods.

Where do the campers come from?

Nicolet campers come from all over the United States and approximately 15% are international.

How many campers are there?

Camp has a capacity of 100 campers per session.  Campers are placed in cabins based on the grade completed just prior to camp.  East End campers range in age from 7-11 and West End campers are between the ages of 12-17.

How many staff work at camp each session?

We have a staff to camper ratio of 1:3.  Counselors come from all over the United States and internationally.  Approximately 75% come from the USA and 25% from other countries.

How many campers will be in my cabin?

Depending on the cabin, you may counsel between 8 and 12 campers.

What are the living accommodations for counselors?

Two counselors share a counselor room in each cabin.  There is a bathroom in each cabin, and a shower facility is just a short walk away.

Do we have a camp uniform?

The Camp Nicolet uniform, consisting of a green staff polo shirt, tan shorts, and white tennis shoes, is worn for a handful of special days and events throughout the summer.  For details on purchasing uniform items, please visit our clothing supplier  here.  Comfy clothing appropriate to the activity in which you are instructing is encouraged.  It’s best to bring a good supply of shorts, jeans, tee shirts, and swimsuits to camp.

If I am working on the waterfront, do I have a specific uniform?

All waterfront staff (swimming, water skiing, small craft, and sailing) must wear red at all times.  Your bathing suit and warm-up clothing does not have to say “lifeguard,” but it must be red in color.

If I am teaching riding, do I need to bring my own boots and helmet?

Yes.  Please bring your own protective headwear and footwear.  Boots must have a heel.

Do we have to order clothing from Lands’ End?

Green staff uniform polo shirts are supplied by Camp Nicolet.  You may elect to purchase your staff shirt if you wish.  Visit Lands’ End, our camp clothing supplier, to purchase other optional camp logo apparel.

What should I pack?

Please visit Lands’ End, our camp clothing supplier, for a complete packing list.  This list is very helpful and – with the exception of the difference in uniform shirts – applies to both campers and staff.  A warm comforter or sleeping bag is suggested for cooler nights at the beginning of summer.

Are there laundry facilities on site or do we do our laundry on time off in town?

There are three options for staff laundry:

→ Utilize the small on-site staff laundry facility

→ You may do your laundry in town on time off

→ You may utilize the commercial laundry service arranged for campers.  There is a small fee, billable to your camp store account, if you choose to use this service.

Can I bring my car to camp?

We encourage you to bring your car to camp.  Every staff member has one 24-hour period off per week, and its often exciting to spend time in town.  Eagle River does not have cab service nor does Camp Nicolet offer a camp vehicle for staff time off.  We try to ensure that someone on your day off has a vehicle.

Do we get personal time while at camp?

Staff members have personal time from 9:30 to 11:30 every evening, when you’re not scheduled for evening patrol.  Staff can go to the staff room to watch a movie, check email, or just relax.

Are we allowed to bring our cell phones, laptops, iPods, and other electronic devices?

You are allowed to bring your personal electronic devices to camp, but please know we’re a technology-free camp and those items should not be used during daytime hours or in locations visible to campers.  Such items may be used in the staff room or on your time off.  Camp Nicolet is not responsible for any lost or stolen property.

Are we allowed to have snacks at camp?

Staff may purchase snacks and drinks for themselves but those items should be kept in the staff room in sealed containers.  Food or drink is not allowed in camper cabins.

My bank is back home; does Camp Nicolet offer direct deposit?

For a small fee, domestic staff may select direct deposit.

How often am I paid during the summer?

You are paid semi-monthly, on the 1st and 15th of each month.

With whom will I be working?

The Camp Nicolet staff team is comprised of about 50 people.  It includes administrative staff, area directors, the camp nurses, counseling and instructional staff, facilities staff, kitchen employees, and Leadership Program participants.  Staff range in age from 19 through 70.  Approximately 75% come from the USA and 25% from other countries.  Many staff are also former campers, having completed the Leadership Program.
