An Evolution

Camp History

Step back in time and feel the warmth of Camp Nicolet’s incredible history! Founded in 1944 by Ann and Wendall Schrader, dedicated & inspiring school teachers and coaches, this special place was born from their dream of creating a North Woods summer haven; where young women are empowered to grow, thrive, and connect with the beauty of the natural world. That legacy continues today, as Camp Nicolet is lovingly run by the third generation of the Schrader/Starz family, carrying on the traditions and spirit that have made it a cherished home for generations of campers.

Camp Nicolet is known for beautiful facilities and a peaceful, stately outdoor environment that strengthens the mind, body, and soul as the surroundings wrap themselves around each individual camper like an old friend. Nestled in the Chequamegon/Nicolet National Forest on sparkling Franklin Lake we have:

  • Ten lakefront camper cabins

  • Four tennis courts
  • Four trampolines for trampball
  • A stable and three instructional riding rings plus miles of trails

  • A water ski pavillion, four ski boats, junior ski jump, & a slalom course

  • A sandy beach area for swimming and smallcraft activities
  • A RAVE water trampoline, two slides, a water mat, and two swim rafts for fun in the sun
  • A boathouse with storage for paddles, PFDs, and sails
  • Forest Lodge, which includes a theater, crafts shop, staff room, and a large recreational area with a fireplace
  • The library, with a collection of books and games
  • An archery range with 4 targets and state-of-the-art equipment
  • A beautiful picnic area for outdoor BBQ and picnic dinners
  • The Nicolet Outpost – with 8 campsites, fire rings, shelters, and picnic tables for nights under the stars and weekly cookouts
  • The Canteen, a camp store stocked with snacks and goodies

  • The Camp Office and Post Office, inside the administrative headquarters

  • A maintenance team who takes pride in ensuring all community spaces are kept clean and safe.

  • A recently renovated Shower House with 5 private shower stalls.

My 9 years at Camp Nicolet are some of the highlights of my life.  I think of my time on Lake Franklin, laughing, singing, learning new skills, and making lifelong friends. The memories are a source of pure joy and happiness buffering the inevitable challenges of life!

Everyone was so kind and attentive. I enjoyed getting the letters and seeing the excitement in our daughters handwriting. She survived without her phone! We have camp as a reference now, as we remind her of how much she accomplished without devices or streaming media

Camp is just a magical place where girls from all over come to be girls, and I can honestly say there has not been a day at camp out of all my years that I did not feel like I had best friends who really cared for me.
